String Hoppers a.k.a Idiyappam

A good breakfast/dinner option for lovers of indian food. Can be paired with sweet or savoury sides depending on preference

Serves: 2-3
  • Rice flour, 1.5 cups
  • Hot water, 2 cups
  • Oil, 2 tsps
  • Salt to taste
To make the Dough
  1. Add rice flour, oil and salt in a bowl and mix well.
  2. Add hot water and immediately start mixing it with a wooden spoon.
  3. Keep mixing it till comes together and a dough is formed.
To make the Idiyappam
  1. Grease the insides of the Idiyappam maker.
  2. Take a small portion of the dough and put it in the idiyappam maker.
  3. Squeeze out the stringy idiyappam onto a greased plate which can be put in a steamer.
  4. Steam for 10-12 minutes on high flame.
  5. Serve hot!
The dough should be soft and non-sticky. If it is hard, add more water to soften it and if its sticky add a few tablespoons of rice flour.
If you decide to make the dough and prepare the string hoppers later, rub oil on the dough and cover with a wet cloth to ensure that the dough doesnt dry out.
